The family's name, polyocular slug, contains the prefix poly, meaning 'multiple', and the word ocular, meaning 'eyepiece' or 'connected with eyes or vision'. These words together mean 'multiple eyes', which is in relation to the six eyes that the Bogswallow has. The second word, slug, describes the type of creatures that reside in the family, as they are slugs.
The family's genus, Gastropoidulus, can be split up into gastropoid and the suffix ulus. The first part, gastropoid, is derived from the word gastropod, which are most commonly slugs and snails; In this case, slugs, due to their lack of a shell.
