The following article or section is in need of assistance from someone who plays Pikmin 3 Deluxe.
Particularly: Expand on what sort of record-keeping limitations exist when the player changes the difficulty in the file select screen. Also, finish the table.

Difficulty is a feature in Pikmin 3 Deluxe that alters aspects of the game in order to adjust how easy or hard it is. These aspects include the length of a day and the strength of enemies.

Upon creating a save file on the file selection screen, the player will be prompted to choose a difficulty. There are 3 options: Normal, Hard, and Ultra-Spicy, in increasing order of difficulty. The latter can only be unlocked once the player has completed the story mode in Hard difficulty, or completed the demo.

At any point in the saved game selection screen, the player can press the ZR Button on the Switch to change a file's difficulty, but doing so makes it impossible for the player to earn any badge related to completing Story Mode in a given difficulty, in that file. If the player uses this option to change to the exact same difficulty the file is already at, nothing will happen.

Differences

The following is a list of known differences between difficulty modes. The Wii U version of Pikmin 3 is included for comparison's sake.

Subject Normal Hard Ultra-Spicy Wii U

Fruit juice 100% 100% 50% 100%
Enemy health Enemies usually have lower health than on the Wii U[1] Most enemies have twice as much as health than on Normal difficulty[1] Enemies have higher health than on Hard difficulty N/A
Nectar eggs in the Garden of Hope Many Several None None
Pikmin limit 100 100 60 100
Pikmin drowning time ≈11 seconds ≈6 seconds ≈3 seconds ≈6 seconds
Sprayed Pikmin drowning time ≈5 seconds ≈2 seconds ≈1 second ≈2 seconds
Leader health ≈1.5 times the usual Same as on the Wii U Same as on the Wii U N/A

In addition, in Normal difficulty, having the active leader collect a data file will automatically open it, whereas in the other difficulties, this is only true for some data files.

Internally, other game modes use rules based off of specific difficulty modes. Each stage is capable of specifying what difficulty mode it uses.
