An untitled Pikmin mobile app developed by Niantic and Nintendo has been announced for mobile devices, featuring augmented reality gameplay. It was announced on March 23rd, 2021, and is set to release later in 2021.[1][2]

Gameplay

The following features of the app have been published:

  • The app will be an augmented reality game involving exploring the real world.[1][3]
  • It will feature gameplay activities to encourage walking.[3][4]
  • Red Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin, and Blue Pikmin appear, and their flowers can be either white, red, yellow, or blue.
  • According to Niantic developer Tatsuo Nomura, the gameplay will be very different than that of Pokémon GO.[5]
  • Mii characters will be implemented in some capacity.[4]

History

The app was announced on March 23rd, 2021, simultaneously by Nintendo and Niantic, on Twitter[1][2] and their own websites[3][4]. The initial announcements featured some basic information and a single image. Developers at Niantic also tweeted about the game.[5]

The Niantic website contains a sign-up page where people can sign up to receive updates and invitations to closed testing access.[6] Beta testing began in Singapore on March 30th, 2021.[7]
