Pikmin for Nintendo 3DS (working title) is an upcoming Pikmin game revealed to be released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2017. The game was announced on the September 1st, 2016 Nintendo Direct[1], where some gameplay information and footage was shown. It is currently unknown if this game is the previously announced Pikmin 4 or an entirely new game.
Gameplay
Unlike the previous Pikmin games, which were 3D real-time strategy, this game is a 2.5D sidescroller. Players control Captain Olimar left or right on the ground, since it doesn't look like he can jump, and also vertically when climbing a vine or underwater. Players can whistle Pikmin from anywhere on the screen, which brings them to Olimar's side, and once there, can be thrown by him to wherever the player taps. With the help of the Pikmin, the player must defeat enemies and collect treasures.
Gameplay happens on the bottom screen, although both screens show the action. Captain Olimar lands on the stage after being beamed down by a blue ship that highly resembles the Research Pod. Pikmin that are thrown at branches from below go up through them and land on top of them. Pikmin thrown close to a task like a pile of bridge fragments will automatically walk towards it and begin working on it. Enemy health is represented with a horizontal bar, unlike the pie chart of previous games. Blue Pikmin thrown while underwater are tossed in a straight line instead of an arc. Obstacles that need to be weighed down have some circles on them that light up whenever a new Pikmin is added. When all circles are lit, the obstacle is successfully crushed.
There are some golden nut-like objects that seem to be important, since they're shown several times throughout the gameplay footage.
Plot
Nothing about the game's plot is currently known, other than the fact that the player controls Captain Olimar. As such, it is not known whether or not this game is canon.

Enemies
Red Bulborb
During the game reveal's Nintendo Direct, the Red Bulborb is revealed to return via cutscene akin to Boss Battles in Pikmin 3, suggesting an important role. In accordance with the game's overall art style, the Red Bulborb appears much less detailed and cartoony than in the main games. Its legs are more curved, its size is considerably larger and most notably, its face is much flatter with the eye stalks being placed much closer to the tip of the snout. During its respective battle, the Red Bulborb will slowly walk towards the player, constantly biting with its head lowered and jump out of the grass in the background. At certain points during the battle, the Red Bulborb will glance down, whereas the player must throw Pikmin at its eyes to make it reel back in pain and pass through its legs.
Puckering Blinnow
Puckering Blinnows return, and are found underwater.
Unnamed yellow bird creature
An unknown yellow bird-like creature can be seen on the Nintendo Direct trailer. Unlike regular birds, this creature has no wings.
Unnamed eel-like creature
An unknown eel-like creature can be seen on the Nintendo Direct trailer underwater. It comes out from the bottom of the screen and strikes upwards very quickly. Its mouth is on top, and any Pikmin that touch it are eaten.
Unnamed small green flying creature
A group of unknown small green creatures can be seen flying on the Nintendo Direct trailer. These enemies can carry Pikmin or an unknown golden object, and if other Pikmin are thrown at them, they instantly die and drop whatever they're carrying.
Unnamed large green flying creature
A large green dragonfly-like creature can be seen flying on the Nintendo Direct trailer. It carries several unknown golden objects under it, and the player can throw Pikmin at them to break them into smaller parts that can be carried.
