Sheargrub
Himeagea mandibulosa
Sheargrubs are small, grub-like enemies in both Pikmin and Pikmin 2. They live underground, though surface when they feel vibrations from approaching prey.
Overview
Sheargrubs come in two different colors: pink and purple. Pink Sheargrubs are female, while purple Sheargrubs are male. Female Sheargrubs do not have any mandibles because of this they are incapable attacking Olimar or the Pikmin. Male Sheargrubs, however, are exactly the opposite. They have mandibles and will jump onto their prey and tear them apart.
In Pikmin, when the male Sheargrubs have a Pikmin in their mouth, they are invulnerable to damage except when Captain Olimar throws a Pikmin on them. This has been fixed in Pikmin 2, allowing players to kill them even if they have a Pikmin in their mandibles. Sheargrubs, both male and female, will also deconstruct any bridges built. This can be avoided by simply attacking the Sheargrubs eating.
It is also important to note that after you kill opposing Sheargrubs, in 2 or 3 days they will come back.
These creatures are also related to the Shearwig.
Olimar's Notes
Female
The males of this species are purple and black creatures with tapered mouths, while the females are lighter in color and lack an armored exoskeleton. As with most Mandiblards, these creatures have regressed to the point where they have lost both legs and wings. They can be seen crawling around on the ground and are believed to feed on the vegetable extracts from the congealed fluids of expired pikmin.
Male
This specimen is a Male Sheargrub. Having lost both its legs and wings, the male burrows into the soil and waits to ambush small creatures that pass by. This beast's mandibles can be dangerous, making creatures such as pikmin easy prey.
Louie's Notes
Female
For an unforgettable quiche, slice this creature up and mix with four eggs, two vine-ripened tomatoes, dried zucchini, and generous handfuls of feta and swiss. Bake until crusty and golden. This beast is most flavorable if caught and cooked just after laying its eggs.
Male
Spread several specimens in the bottom of a casserole dish and layer with sliced avocado. Bake until the meat is choice and the cheese is lusciously browned.
Killing strategies
Pikmin 1
Female Sheargrubs are cannon fodder and can be defeated with ease by either the Pikmin or Olimar. The males are also very easy, but if one happens to get a hold of a Pikmin, it is invincible to swarming until the Pikmin dies. If you can throw a Pikmin onto the Sheargrub's back it will die instantly and the Pikmin will be saved. Attack with Olimar if possible. If there is water nearby, like in the Forest of Hope, lead them into the water. Since they cannot fly, and will keep following you, they will drown.
Pikmin 2
The male Sheargrub's mysterious invincibility is no longer present here, making them incredibly easy to kill. Simply swarm with a group of Pikmin and they'll have no chance. Same as Pikmin 1, if there is a body of water nearby, lead them in and drown them.
