I agree w/ the first paragraph in some respects. I think that the mamutas shown in-game aren't fully grown. When they get fully grown, they lay the egg. The Progg will be fully developed in the egg at a certain time, but its shell will take longer to form. If a predator tries to eat the egg, the Progg will hatch and injure or kill the predator. Then, theoretically, it would use its uprooting ability to eat the pikmin its parents buried for it. The nutrients from the Pikmin would make its exoskeleton grow faster and eventually mature it into a mamuta. The fact that the Mamuta and Progg share no features is covered by both theories on this page and the fact that it is malformed. would you think that a malformed baby bird would look much like a regular one?
