The '''Breadbug''' ({{j|パンモドキ|Pan Modoki|Pseudo Bread}}) is an [[enemy]] in {{p1}}, {{p2}} and {{p4}}. Breadbugs resemble {{w|Bread roll|bread rolls}}, and are the namesake of the [[Breadbug family]]. They cannot harm leaders or [[Pikmin family|Pikmin]] directly, but can drag objects into their nests, making them harder for the player to retrieve. Breadbugs are typically found in underground areas.


The '''Breadbug''', also known as the '''Vanilla Breadbug''', is an enemy in the [[Pikmin series|Pikmin]] games. This creature resembles a bread roll in appearance, and is the namesake of the [[Breadbug family]]. It does no harm to the Pikmin directly, though it can pull away small objects (in [[Pikmin 1]]), or both small and rather large (in [[Pikmin 2]]) objects vital to the Pikmin into its dwelling. If Pikmin are holding onto something when the Breadbug pulls it into its nest, they will die. It has a large amount of tough blubber, making it immune to swarming.
A [[boss]] variant of the Breadbug, the [[Giant Breadbug]], appears in ''Pikmin 2'' and ''Pikmin 4''.


The most common way to kill a Breadbug is to wait until it takes hold of an object, then swarm Pikmin onto that object and return it to any [[Onion]] or the Ship's [[research Pod|pod]]. The Onion or the Ship receives the object and the Breadbug takes damage. This method usually has to be done twice, though the first hit is so strong, it may just take one Pikmin thrown on its back to finish it off. It is also possible to defeat a Breadbug by throwing Pikmin on top of it, but this is slow as there is a period of immunity after each successful throw.  The members of this species encountered in Pikmin 1 move more swiftly than those in Pikmin 2, making them more difficult to kill via this method. Strangely, [[Olimar]] can damage the Breadbug by hitting it in Pikmin 1, but this has no effect in Pikmin 2.

Another easy way to kill the Breadbug is to drop [[Purple Pikmin]] on it. Their heavy weight will hurt the Breadbug, and they also try to home in as they land. If you are a little short on patience, [[Ultra-bitter spray|petrifying]] it will also make it vulnerable to swarming.

Breadbugs typically walk freely around the area, ignoring Pikmin and other creatures. If they come across something they can carry, they will begin heading straight towards it. If they reach it, they will begin to drag it along the ground, slowly walking backwards. They will not target objects that Pikmin are carrying in ''Pikmin'' and ''Pikmin 2'', but they will in ''Pikmin 4''.

In ''Pikmin'' and ''Pikmin 2'', each Breadbug has a nest from which it emerges at the beginning of the day or the sublevel, and this nest is the location that it drags objects to. When it reaches the nest, it will go inside with the object, and then emerge to start walking around again. In ''Pikmin 2'', Breadbugs will heal all their [[health]] when they collect an object. Enemy corpses carried into the nest cannot be retrieved, but [[treasures]] in ''Pikmin 2'' are released from the nest when the Breadbug associated with that nest is defeated. In ''Pikmin 4'', Breadbugs do not have nests, and drag objects to various predetermined locations around the sublevel, such as mounds of dirt and grass hiding spots. If no locations are available, they will drag the treasure around aimlessly. Pikmin can [[dig]] objects out of the mounts of dirt and carry them back, or carry them out of the grass.

In ''[[Pikmin 4]]'', Breadbugs always have a carrying strength of 10. Once the total carrying strength of the Pikmin on the object exceeds 10, the Breadbug will be dragged across the floor. If there aren't enough Pikmin or if there is a tie, the Breadbug can shake Pikmin off the object, similar to when both teams try to carry an object in a [[Dandori Battle]]. Breadbugs, as their name suggests, have a distinct resemblance to rolls of bread. They are bipedal and have small legs with two clawed toes each, and a small snout on the roll-like part of their body. Two eyes are above this nose, tucked under a fold of blubber with a brown color similar to that of a toasted roll. Three bumps of fat are atop their bodies, along their back. In ''Pikmin'' and ''Pikmin 2'', these bumps are smooth, whereas in ''Pikmin 4'' they appear more defined, as if cut with a knife.

The Pikmin should deliver the object, and more often than not, get the now-dead Breadbug and deliver it as well.
 
It is also possible to defeat a Breadbug by throwing Pikmin on top of it, but this is slow as there is a period of immunity after each successful throw. Luckily, after being hit with a Pikmin, and finishing its pain animation, it will look left and right for some brief seconds, and during this time, it is vulnerable. By carefully timing, or by throwing a small barrage of Pikmin during this time, it is possible to hit the Breadbug again without having to move the cursor or the leader, though this is difficult to do in the [[New Play Control! Pikmin 2|Wii version]] due to the motion controls. The members of this species encountered in ''Pikmin'' move more swiftly than those in ''Pikmin 2'', making them even more difficult to kill via this method. Using [[Purple Pikmin]] makes this method faster since their heavy weight will hurt the Breadbug, and they also try to home in as they land. The Breadbug (パンモドキ?, lit.: "Pseudo Bread") is an enemy in Pikmin, Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4. Breadbugs resemble bread rolls, and are the namesake of the Breadbug family. They cannot harm leaders or Pikmin directly, but can drag objects into their nests, making them harder for the player to retrieve. Breadbugs are typically found in underground areas.

A boss variant of the Breadbug, the Giant Breadbug, appears in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4.

Behavior

Breadbugs typically walk freely around the area, ignoring Pikmin and other creatures. If they come across something they can carry, they will begin heading straight towards it. If they reach it, they will begin to drag it along the ground, slowly walking backwards. They will not target objects that Pikmin are carrying in Pikmin and Pikmin 2, but they will in Pikmin 4.

In Pikmin and Pikmin 2, each Breadbug has a nest from which it emerges at the beginning of the day or the sublevel, and this nest is the location that it drags objects to. When it reaches the nest, it will go inside with the object, and then emerge to start walking around again. In Pikmin 2, Breadbugs will heal all their health when they collect an object. Enemy corpses carried into the nest cannot be retrieved, but treasures in Pikmin 2 are released from the nest when the Breadbug associated with that nest is defeated. In Pikmin 4, Breadbugs do not have nests, and drag objects to various predetermined locations around the sublevel, such as mounds of dirt and grass hiding spots. If no locations are available, they will drag the treasure around aimlessly. Pikmin can dig objects out of the mounts of dirt and carry them back, or carry them out of the grass.

The main way to deal damage to Breadbugs is by dragging them to the Onion, Research Pod, or S.S. Beagle. Pikmin can attempt to carry the object a Breadbug is carrying. Breadbugs have a carrying strength that is different in each game, and if enough Pikmin are carrying the object to overpower that strength, then the Pikmin will begin carrying the object and the Breadbug, dragging the Breadbug towards the base. When the object is collected, the Breadbug will be pulled up with the object, then fall off and take a large amount of damage. In Pikmin and Pikmin 2, if not enough Pikmin are carrying the object to overpower the Breadbug, the Breadbug will drag them along with the object to the nest, and the Pikmin will die when the object enters the nest. In Pikmin 4, if not enough Pikmin are carrying the object, the Breadbug will shake the object to shake some of the Pikmin off.

Breadbugs cannot be attacked by simply throwing Pikmin at them, swarming, or charging. In Pikmin, Olimar can punch them to damage them, but they will attempt to shake him off if damaged too much. They take a small amount of damage when a Pikmin is thrown precisely on top of them, and this causes them to roll over and drop the treasure they're carrying in Pikmin and Pikmin 2, or to run around for a while in Pikmin 4.

Carrying power

Breadbugs in Pikmin will only drag objects with a weight of 1. To overpower the Breadbug, 2 Pikmin must try to carry that object.

In Pikmin 2, objects dragged by Breadbugs vary in how much strength is needed to overpower them, depending on the weight of the object and its maximum number of carriers. The exact formula is unknown and it's possible that one does not exist, as the game may use a lookup table instead. However, a formula that works in every case is:

So in other words: the object's weight, plus one-half of the carrying support slots, plus 1, rounded down, equals the amount of Pikmin needed to overpower a Breadbug.

Breadbugs will ignore objects with a weight heavier than 10, as well as all treasures in the Explorer's Friend Series. They are also unable to drag very small or flat treasures such as the Science Project or Luck Wafer. Giant Breadbugs are no stronger than regular ones and all the same rules apply. The following table lists all possible combinations of weights and maximum carriers with their respective amounts needed to overpower. Most of these results cannot be observed in the game.

In Pikmin 4, Breadbugs always have a carrying strength of 10. Once the total carrying strength of the Pikmin on the object exceeds 10, the Breadbug will be dragged across the floor. If there aren't enough Pikmin or if there is a tie, the Breadbug can shake Pikmin off the object, similar to when both teams try to carry an object in a Dandori Battle. The Giant Breadbug has a carrying strength of 30.

Appearance

Breadbugs, as their name suggests, have a distinct resemblance to rolls of bread. They are bipedal and have small legs with two clawed toes each, and a small snout on the roll-like part of their body. Two eyes are above this nose, tucked under a fold of blubber with a brown color similar to that of a toasted roll. Three bumps of fat are atop their bodies, along their back. In Pikmin and Pikmin 2, these bumps are smooth, whereas in Pikmin 4 they appear more defined, as if cut with a knife.

    • One Breadbug is present in this area. It is initially located towards the south of the map, close to the bridge leading to the Gravity Jumper. This is where the Breadbug's nest is found. However, it wanders around the area so it doesn't have a set location but can be seen in this location at the start of the day or when dragging an object back to its nest such as a 1-Pellet.

Challenge Mode

    • One Breadbug is present in this challenge mode stage. It's initially found adjacent to the Yellow and Blue Onion but will wander around the stage. It always heads for the Red 1-Pellet found near where the S.S. Dolphin lands in story mode, specifically the one next to the fire geyser.

    • One Breadbug is present in this stage. It's initially found to the east of the Red Onion but will also wander around the stage. It always heads for the Blue 1-Pellet found in the landing site.

    • There are two Breadbugs on sublevel 1. One is located in front of the S.S. Beagle and adjacent to the pair of nectar eggs. The other Breadbug is found beyond the previous one, close to the Long-Shot Totem and Disk of Sorrowful Wisdom. However, like previous games they do wander around the area looking for treasures and enemy corpses.
    • There are three Breadbugs on sublevel 4. One is located to the east of the map, sharing the space with the Flighty Joustmite closest to the Planetary Rubber Cutie. The other two can be seen near the other Flightly Joustmite, which is close to the ground-level Waddlequaff. These three also wander the sublevel.

Strategy

The easiest way to kill a Breadbug is to wait until it takes hold of an object, then swarm Pikmin onto that object and return it to the Onion, Research Pod, or S.S. Beagle. This method usually has to be done twice, though the first hit is so strong, it may just take one Pikmin thrown on its back to finish it off. So to better multitask, the best strategy would be to throw Pikmin on top of it once or twice and then have it drag an object and use Pikmin to carry it the opposite way. The Pikmin should deliver the object, and more often than not, get the now-dead Breadbug and deliver it as well.

It is also possible to defeat a Breadbug by throwing Pikmin on top of it, but this is slow as there is a period of immunity after each successful throw. Luckily, after being hit with a Pikmin, and finishing its pain animation, it will look left and right for some brief seconds, and during this time, it is vulnerable. By carefully timing, or by throwing a small barrage of Pikmin during this time, it is possible to hit the Breadbug again without having to move the cursor or the leader, though this is difficult to do in the Wii version due to the motion controls. The members of this species encountered in Pikmin move more swiftly than those in Pikmin 2, making them even more difficult to kill via this method. Using Purple Pikmin makes this method faster since their heavy weight will hurt the Breadbug, and they also try to home in as they land. With good enough timing, whistling Pikmin off of a tug of war with a Breadbug will stun the creature for a brief moment, possibly allowing an attack.

Another quick way to kill it in Pikmin 2 is to use an ultra-bitter spray to petrify it, which will make it vulnerable to swarming.

This pesky scavenger is truly annoying. It attempts to steal the spoils that the Pikmin earn in battle. If the Pikmin chase it too far, they can be dragged into its lair along with their food. It may look weak, but its appearance is deceiving.

The breadbug is a scavenger and will drag away lightweight Pikmin food. Don't bother attacking the breadbug. Instead, send Pikmin to go after the piece of food that the breadbug is dragging. With enough Pikmin, your team will be able to overpower the breadbug and drag it back to an onion. When the onion beams up the bug, the pest will take major damage.

The nest the creature hides in has its own internal name. In Pikmin, it is hollec, perhaps a pun between "hole" and the enemy's internal name, while in Pikmin 2, it's a combination of パン? (lit.: "bread") and "house" – panhouse.

  • The Breadbug is one of few enemies to have a figurine modeled after them.
  • Its nest is very similar in appearance to the Hermit Crawmad's hole in Pikmin 2.
  • Breadbugs seem to have cannibalistic tendencies: in Pikmin 2, they will carry dead Breadbugs into their nests and eat them.
  • In Pikmin, if a Breadbug gets stuck, it will burrow into the ground after about 8 seconds and respawn out of its hole.[1]
  • In Pikmin, a glitch can occur if a cutscene plays while the Pikmin and Breadbug are fighting over an object, where the object will continue to move during the cutscene and leave the possession of its carriers.
  • Breadbugs exhibit behavior typical of real world ferrets, which are known to take random items and drag them into burrows or other enclosed areas.
  • A roughly exact copy of the Breadbug in Pikmin 2 exists unused inside Pikmin 3's files.
