Creeping Chrysanthemum
The Creeping Chrysanthemum (びっくり菊) is an enemy in p2 and p4. When dormant, Creeping Chrysanthemums greatly resemble large flowers used for level scenery. When Pikmin or the leaders get close, they will spring out of the ground, revealing their root-legs and their bulbous bodies.

Taraxacum rovinia
In Pikmin 2, they resemble Margarets when dormant, but they can be told apart from the normal flowers, as they have one fewer flower, no leaves on their "stems", slightly visible patterns on their stem, and their large flowers have the Chrysanthemum's eyes visible. They have large red mouths that emerge from their tallest flowers. They move moderately slowly, and will return to their original spots if left alone for a while. They replant themselves by standing above the spot where they originally came and sucking themselves into the ground until only the "flowers" remain. These enemies cannot be petrified while they are in the ground.

The Creeping Chrysanthemum is an enemy in Pikmin 2. When dormant, it greatly resembles the large yellow flowers known as the Margaret used for level scenery. It can be told apart from the normal flowers, as it has one less flower, no leaves on the "stem", and the large flowers have the Chrysanthemum's eyes visible. When the Pikmin or the pilots get close, it will spring out of the ground, revealing its root-arms and its bulbous body. It moves moderately slowly, and will return to its original spot if left alone for a while. This enemy is not able to be petrified while it is in the ground. Their appearance could be believed to have come from the the enemies called Piranha Plants <span style="color:blue">1</span> from the Mario <span style="color:blue">2</span> series of video games.
The Chrysanthemums were heavily redesigned in Pikmin 4. They now have white flowers resembling Fleabane, their mouths are at the top of their bodies instead of on stalks, they have large tongues which they launch to attack and their legs now resemble those of frogs. When they launch their tongues and miss, they will take a while to retrieve them.

Pikmin
Its large mouth will pick up the Pikmin to eat them, but if it fails to capture any, it will slam its head into its body and fall to the ground, struggling to get back up. This presents an opportunity for the player to attack the Chrysanthemum. Its weak point is its body, which can be hit at all times. It is generally weak against medium-sized groups of Pikmin. The best way to defeat it is to simply swarm it, being careful not to let it eat any Pikmin. Another way is to daze it with Purple Pikmin then swarm to kill it. Yet another way is to quickly dart forward and attack, and when it tries to eat Pikmin, retreat. It will hit itself, knocking itself down. Use Purple Pikmin to quickly kill it when it is struggling to regain balance. Another good method of defeating it is to have one leader dismissed without any Pikmin and the other leader close by with Pikmin. Then, have the leader without any Pikmin wake up the creature and switch leaders as soon as it wakes up and start swarming or throwing Pikmin at the beast until it's dead.

Leaders
After waking it, attack it until it does its recoil move, avoid it, then attack again. It's best to attack the Chrysanthemum from behind to minimize risk to the attacking leader. Alternatively, allowing the Chrysanthemum to bite and stun itself will allow for some extra punching time at the cost of increased risk to the leader.

Pikmin 4
Creeping Chrysanthemums are arguably a lot harder to spot than they were in Pikmin 2 because their eyes no longer glow and they typically keep their eyelids shut. An easy way to tell a Creeping Crystanthemum from a normal flower is to look at the yellow centre of the flower. Creeping Chrysanthemums have a small slit in the centre where their eyelids are and are smoothly textured instead of having visable anthers. Quick reaction times on the whistle can also prevent any casualties if caught off guard.

Following the redesign, the Chrysanthemum now has a frog-like tounge to eat Pikmin. Purple Pikmin deal especially large amounts of damage to this enemy with their impacts, and Winged Pikmin can fly above this enemy's tongue, but it is unlikely the player will have access to these types while fighting the beast. Instead, it is recommended to ride Oatchi to prevent Pikmin loss. Circle around the Chrysanthemum and rush into it from behind. Using a good amount of Red Pikmin or Rock Pikmin is recommended, since these can add some extra damage to a charge and prevent an unnecessarily lengthened fight. Ice Pikmin are also good to stop the enemy from reacting to your onslaught.

Alternatively, a single bomb rock is enough to put an end to this beast, even if it is hiding in the ground.

*Despite the Creeping Chrysanthemum's drastically different appearance from Pikmin 2, Olimar and Louie's Piklopedia notes remain mostly unchanged in Pikmin 4, meaning that Olimar still states that the creature has no need for leaves despite it now possessing them. This is made even more bizarre considering the fact that Olimar's notes are updated to say that Pikmin are fooled by the mimic, contrary to them supposedly seeing past it according to Pikmin 2.
*Olimar's notes on the Creeping Chrysanthemum in the Japanese version of Pikmin 2 are the first mention of the Ambuloradicis class, which would go unnamed in English until Pikmin 4.

The Creeping Chrysanthemum (びっくり菊?, lit.: "Surprising Chrysanthemum") is an enemy in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4. When dormant, Creeping Chrysanthemums greatly resemble large flowers used for level scenery. When Pikmin or the leaders get close, they will spring out of the ground, revealing their root-legs and their bulbous bodies.

The Creeping Chrysanthemum is also a collectible trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Like Pikmin, the creeping chrysanthemum is a member of a group of creatures with ambulatory root structures. This creature is known as a "mimic," but because it is actually a form of plant, this label is not entirely accurate. For unknown reasons, the creeping chrysanthemum's mimicry does not fool Pikmin, perhaps because they share a similar heritage. Pikmin 2 Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

If you're not specifically looking for a Creeping Chrysanthemum, you may miss it until you're right on top of it and it pops out of the ground. Keep your Pikmin away from the predator's mouth and toss them at its body. If the creature falls over, swarm it before it can right itself.

Translation

A member of the Ambuloradicis class, like the Pikmin, it is a plant that has acquired animal-like characteristics. Although capable of photosynthesis using its leaves, it hides its body underground and lies in wait, capturing other organisms as its main source of nourishment.

Feature #1: Plant-like features

The head resembles a plant of the Asteraceae family, with eyes in the flower parts.
(Image text: "The flower's scent is almost the same as that of the real thing, and not even Flutterbies and Pikmin notice it")

Feature #2: Animal-like features

When prey approaches, it leaps from the ground.

Feature #3: Parasitic

Similar to the Bulbmin, the plant part parasitizes another organism.
(Image text: "Depending on the type of host, the flower color, body shape, and method of predation differ")

Strategy[edit]

Pikmin 2[edit]

Pikmin[edit]

Leaders[edit]

After waking it, attack it until it does its recoil move, avoid it, then attack again. It's best to attack the Chrysanthemum from behind to minimize risk to the attacking leader. Alternatively, allowing the Chrysanthemum to bite and stun itself will allow for some extra punching time at the cost of increased risk to the leader.

Pikmin 4[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

This enemy appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

The Creeping Chrysanthemum trophy from Super Smash Bros. Brawl Description:

An enemy flower and a member of the chrysanthemum family that closely resembles the Margaret flower. This flower feeds on prey and, despite being a plant, performs no photosynthesis and exposes no leaves—just flowers on top. It usually stays underground with only its flowers exposed, waiting to jump out and attack. It also uses rootlike legs to walk around.

GameCube Pikmin 2
How to obtain: Collect all fighter-related trophies. Type: Fighter Related

Naming[edit]

 • Common name: "Chrysanthemum" is the family name for the enemy and the Margaret, known in the real world as a chrysanthemum. "Creeping" refers to its startling hiding and emerging behavior.
 • Japanese nickname: びっくり菊?. It translates to something closer to "Surprising Chrysanthemum", given the surprise caused when it reveals itself to not be a simple plant.
 • Japanese name: キクヅモリ?. Likely from 菊作り?, lit.: "chrysanthemum growing" and つもり?, lit.: "pretender". "つもり" is the word used like -のつもりでいる?, lit.: "pretend to be -"
 • Scientific name: Taraxacum rovinia. Taraxacum is the real world genus for the Dandelion. Rovinia may be derived from the verb "rove".
 • Internal names: Its internal name, hana, simply means ? (lit.: "flower"). In Pikmin 4, it is changed to BIKKURIGIKU, which matches its Japanese common name.
 • Prerelease: None.

Trivia[edit]

 • Despite its appearance, Pikmin 2's Creeping Chrysanthemum uses the same AI that is also used for the Red Bulborb, Hairy Bulborb, Orange Bulborb, and Fiery Bulblax.[2]
 • The Creeping Chrysanthemum shares a genus name with the Dandelion even though they are in separate families; in real life, this is impossible, as different species cannot be in the same genus and different families. This is likely a mistake.
 • In Pikmin 2, the Creeping Chrysanthemum is voiced by Takahiro Watanabe.[3]
 • Despite the Creeping Chrysanthemum's drastically different appearance from Pikmin 2, Olimar and Louie's Piklopedia notes remain mostly unchanged in Pikmin 4, meaning that Olimar still states that the creature has no need for leaves despite it now possessing them. This is made even more bizarre considering the fact that Olimar's notes are updated to say that Pikmin are fooled by the mimic, contrary to them supposedly seeing past it according to Pikmin 2.
 • Olimar's notes on the Creeping Chrysanthemum in the Japanese version of Pikmin 2 are the first mention of the Ambuloradicis class, which would go unnamed in English until Pikmin 4.
