Dandori (段取り?) is a Japanese word that can be roughly translated as "the procedure (for carrying out a plan)" or "the preparation (before carrying out a plan)". It is introduced as an in-universe word and concept in Pikmin 4, being explained as "the art of organizing your tasks strategically and working with maximum efficiency to execute your plans quickly". While not officially mentioned before this, it is a key concept applicable to the Pikmin series as a whole.
The word is most associated with the Dandori Challenges and Dandori Battles, both of which heavily use the concept.
Pikmin 4
Dandori is first mentioned by Shepherd during the new recruit's first day exploring the Sun-Speckled Terrace. The recruit is confused, prompting Collin to elaborate on the term, referring to it as a "core tenet" of the Rescue Corps.
Dandori is an especially important concept to the leaflings, a group of castaways who have been turned into Pikmin-like creatures. They talk almost exclusively about the concept, with a red leafling specifically insisting that it is a very important tool for surviving on PNF-404. These leaflings are the ones who host Dandori Challenges and Dandori Battles, and refuse to be rescued and cured until their respective challenge or battle is completed.
Trivia
- Outside of the games, Pikmin series creator Shigeru Miyamoto mentions the word after Pikmin 4's reveal trailer, saying it is how the developers refer to the strategic planning of the series.[1]
