Buried treasure is a a form of obstacle introduced in Pikmin 2, in which certain treasures can be encountered buried or partially buried and must be dug up to be retrieved. Only White Pikmin can dig up fully buried treasures, while all types of Pikmin can dig up partially buried treasures. Whether a treasure is buried or partially buried is actually a property of the treasure itself and not its locations; the treasure will always have this trait no matter where it is generated.
In Pikmin 3, fruits, pellets, and spacesuit upgrades sometimes appear buried though White Pikmin are never required as they are not in story mode. However, some objects are buried while attached to flukeweeds which can be pulled up, but this is a totally different obstacle. Buried treasures are also found in Mission Mode along with White Pikmin, though they are still not required.
