(cleanup. Moved things about and removed random bits. I don't think this is a stub any more - we really don't need to say much more about the console (control schemes would be nice, though))

The Wii U is to be Nintendo's seventh home console, set to be released November 18 for North America, November 30 for Europe and Australia, and December 8 of 2012 for Japan. The primary feature of the Wii U is the Wii U GamePad, which features a 6.2-inch touchscreen.  This screen can be used to provide different views into the game's world, and titles featuring Off-TV Play can be displayed entirely on it, leaving the television free to be used for something else while gaming.
The Wii U will come with a new type of controller, the Wii U GamePad. This new controller's main two features are the embedded touchscreen and its ability to use the touchscreen for displaying games that feature Off-TV Play Support, even after the television screen has turned off.

The GamePad has the buttons of a standard controller, with dual analog sticks, triggers and D-pad, plus a front facing camera, microphone, Near Field Communication capability, gyroscope and accelerometer. It is able to function as a universal TV remote control that does not require the Wii U to be turned on.
The Wii U, aside from its unique controller, will also have a secondary controller (sold separately) called the Wii U Pro Controller. This controller features the same button layout as the gamepad, but on a more compact design with no touchscreen, for use by the more "core gamers".

The Wii U will be backwards compatible with Wii software and controllers, meaning Wii games such as the New Play Control! versions of Pikmin and Pikmin 2 can be played on the Wii U. GameCube games and accessories will not be compatible, but may be made available through the Wii U's Virtual Console service.
Due to the Wii U's processing power and overall preformance, the Wii U will hold the place of the world's most powerful console once it launches, with capabilities surpassing that of the Xbox360 and PS3.

Backwards Compatibility
Pikmin 3 is currently in development for the Wii U and is expected to release in the Spring of 2013. All Pikmin 3 demos have so far shown the ability to display a overhead view of the gameplay map and use the Wii U GamePad for control, in addition to using the Wii Remote and Nunchuck as in the New Play Control! Pikmin titles. Unlike these games, however, Pikmin 3 features Wii Motion Plus capability.
The Wii U will be backwards compatible with all Wii games. It will not be, however, capable of playing Gamecube games or peripherals.

Nintendo Land, a launch title for the console, features 12 mini-games based off Nintendo franchises; one of these is Pikmin, and its mini-game is called Pikmin Adventure.
However, many games from Gamecube and other consoles before that will be available for purchase as virtual console titles.
