They will leave the [[area]]'s boundaries some time after [[Pikmin family|Pikmin]] and [[leader]]s come within range of a swarm of them. Their color indicates what they drop when killed - a drop of [[ultra-spicy spray]] (red), [[ultra-bitter spray]] (purple) or [[nectar]] (yellow). Underground, they only have a 20% chance of dropping these rewards. These creatures instantly collapse and die if touched by a single Pikmin. Unmarked Spectralids seem to not fear creatures that are idling. If there is a [[Mamuta]] in the same level as a swarm of Unmarked Spectralids, it is possible to spot some of the Spectralids land on the creature as it idles. In addition, after both the Unmarked Spectralids and the [[Bulborb|Red]], [[Orange Bulborb|Orange]], and [[Hairy Bulborb]]s have been added to the [[Piklopedia (Pikmin 2)|Piklopedia]], Spectralids can be seen flying around the former two Bulborb varieties in their respective Piklopedia entries.
 
Spectralids merely flutter about without waking up the Bulborbs and may occasionally land on it. They cannot be damaged with punches in any way, not even while petrified or resting atop a Mamuta.

Following English grammar conventions, it is intuitive to read the word "Spectralids" as a plural form of the word "Spectralid". However, "Spectralid" does not appear anywhere in ''Pikmin 2'', nor are the Unmarked Spectralids ever referred to in a sentence in a way that would give a definitive singular form. All [[Piklopedia (Pikmin 2)|Piklopedia]] entries are named in singular form, which would suggest that a single specimen would be called an "Unmarked Spectralids". On the other hand, it could be reasoned that the Piklopedia entry for the Unmarked Spectralids is uniquely plural, as it documents 3 distinct colorations together unlike the entries for the [[Candypop family]]. {{p3}} introduces the [[Flutterbie family]] whose members also use the "Spectralids" name, where it is used as a singular form in [[lock-on]] text. {{p3d}} and {{p4}}'s Piklopedias give each color of Flutterbie its own entry, continuing to use the word "Spectralids" individually.
