The '''Frontier Cavern''' ({{j|辺境の洞窟|Henkyō no Dōkutsu|Frontier Cave}}) is a [[cave]] in the [[Valley of Repose]] in {{p2}}, and is the furthest away from the landing site. It is of above-average difficulty, featuring most major types of [[Grub-dog family|grub-dogs]] and [[lithopod]]s. The cave features a distinct "festive" theme, with [[Frigid Series|Christmas-themed treasures]], sublevels with snow hallways that have red brick walls (as if the player were inside a chimney), and unique music featuring idiophone instruments for two sublevels. The cave's [[boss]] is the [[Empress Bulblax]], which is slightly different than the one in [[Hole of Beasts]] in that it gives birth to [[Bulborb Larva]] every few seconds. In this cave, there are {{pokos|1395}} worth of treasures.

Like the [[Subterranean Complex]], it is impossible to reach the cave before getting [[Blue Pikmin]]. Use Blue Pikmin to remove the [[clog]] in the first pond and build a [[bridge]] over the second. Once this is done, Pikmin of all types can be brought across. Traveling in a straight line from the bridge will lead to the snowman with the [[Unspeakable Wonder]] on its head. Nearby is a slanted bridge that can be built to reach the cave. Defeating the [[Decorated Cannon Beetle]]s, the various [[Blowhogs]] and the [[Cloaking Burrow-Nit]] is recommended, but not strictly necessary.


The cave features all hazards, so a Pikmin squad featuring all types of Pikmin is recommended. The [[Worthless Statue]] and the [[Priceless Statue]] have a high chance of spawning in water, so bringing at least ten [[Blue Pikmin]], or leaving enough room in your squad to obtain the cave's [[Bulbmin]], is highly recommended. Many treasures are buried, so [[White Pikmin]] are a must.

The '''Frontier Cavern''' is the last cavern found in the [[Valley of Repose]] area. To get to it, you may have to clear the area of [[Bulborbs]], [[Blowhogs]], Cannon Beetles, and a [[Cloaking Burrow-nit]]. Before building the bridge to the upper section, where the entrance is, you should get rid of the [[Withering Blowhog]] in the area.
The [[Empress Bulblax]] is slightly different than the one in [[Hole of Beasts]] in that it gives birth to [[Bulborb Larva]] every few seconds. In this cave, there are 1395 [[Poko]]s worth of treasures.


This sublevel has many Snow Bulborbs and a couple of Hairy Bulborbs. Before engaging the Hairy Bulborbs, take out any Snow Bulborbs near it first. Explore the sublevel and have your [[White Pikmin]] [[Dig|unearth]] any buried treasures.
Before starting this cave, you should probably have a good number of purple and blue pikmin. Make sure you have all the other types too. On the first sublevel there should be some doodle bugs which, getting enough pikmin thrown on, should give out some sprays. Be sure to stock up on them.


There is a Violet Candypop Bud if you have less than 20 total Purple Pikmin. When wandering about the area, you may encounter Doodlebugs. After they have emerged from their cover, they may skitter into a [[Figwort]] or a [[Shoot]]. If this happens you can wait until they move and release flatulence to locate them. This is a good time to stock up on [[ultra-bitter spray]]s.

You are likely to fall where there is a large stump. Shelter all of your Pikmin behind it to protect them. Venture out into the sublevel without any Pikmin and use the Decorated Cannon Beetles to clear out any enemies. Then use one of the rocky projectiles to kill the other Decorated Cannon Beetle. Then have the rock-hurling creature kill itself by having the boulder home in on itself. Afterwards, take your Pikmin and collect the Christmas-themed treasures.

This sublevel has a few snow bulborbs and hairy bulborbs. It is recommended that with a group of 20 or so purples to smash the hairy bulborbs. Sense there are likely to be snow bulborbs near, throw purple pikmin onto them when the hairy bulborb gets stunned. Using swarms of pikmin also works. Use the white pikmin after to dig up the buried treasures. Some Violet Candy buds are here in case you're low on purples. You may find doodlebugs and throw pikmin at them in order to make them all have flowers or to stalk up on a spray.

You are likely to fall where there is a large stump. Shelter all of your pikmin behind it. Go out of the "room" and go towards one of the cannon beetles. Then stand between a nearby enemy and the beetle. Keep your distance from both the beetle and the enemy. Once the beetle has fired its cannon ball, step out of the way. it should damage the enemy to a critical extent. Do this until most or all other enemies are gone. Go and either get a small group of purples or a swarm of pikmin to attack the left beetles. Now proceed to find and collect the treasures.

When landing on this sublevel, be warned that two wandering enemies will be patrolling the area, so it is advised you act quickly. Gather all of your Pikmin and scout the level, deactivating any electrical wires and defeating Dwarf Bulbears. If you can, locate the Bulbmin and kill it before the Spotty Bulbear as it will make things easier. Defeat these enemies using whatever killing strategy you want, just make sure you bring the Bulbear's corpse back if it did not disintegrate. Explore the area once all the hazards are cleared and collect and unearth any treasures.

This is one of the most hardest levels, sense it has the spotty bulbear. The landing place will be towards the edge of the level, so go to the back, destroy the electrical wires if there are any. Keep one captain over with the pikmin, while the other captain and purple pikmin go out. With the captain with the purple pikmin, get either the bulbmin's or the spotty bulbear's attention, but not both at the same time. It is a good idea to be one wallspace away from the spotty bulbear when attacking. For handling this one, first stun it behind a wall with purple pikmin. Then, once stunned, run out and attack it with the purples. Be careful so that any young bulbears don't eat your pikmin. Once dead, instantly carry it back to the onion. Now after you have killed both these enemies and obtained any bulbmin, the level should be a brease, except for the few dwarf bulbears that pose hazards for small groups of pikmin. Shut off all electrical wires and poison pipes, use white pikmin to dig up the treasure, get the unburied treasure, and proceed downwards.

Gather all your [[Yellow Pikmin]] and kill all the Anode Beetles, but watch out for the Swooping Snitchbugs and Bumbling Snitchbug. After all the Anode Beetles are defeated, take out the Swooping Snitchbugs and the Bumbling Snitchbug and proceed to collect the treasures. When you attempt to collect a treasure in an alcove, however, another Bumbling Snitchbug will drop from the ceiling. Kill it then continue collecting the treasure. There is a Violet Candypop Bud here to harvest more Purple Pikmin, but note that there is a chance that it will not spawn at all, as detailed [[Pikmin 2 cave generation|here]] and [[Mistake#Missing sublevel objects|here]].
This is another tough level, but not as hard as the previous one. For this level you will probably want to use all yellows to kill off all the anode beetles posing electric hazards to all other pikmin. If you want to get more purple pikmin there is a candypop bud for that. Be sure to pluck any pikmin buried by the snitchbug before going to the next level.

A rest sublevel, but unique as it is one of only 3 rest sublevels in the game to contain a [[treasure]]. There are some Mamutas here, so you can take any leaf or bud Pikmin you have to the Mamuta, and let it pound all of them into the ground, so they become flower Pikmin. Now kill the Mamutas until one of them drops the Brute Knuckles. Also kill the Hydro Dweevil before you collect the treasure as the four-legged nuisance will attempt to carry the Brute Knuckles on its back.

Some of the enemies might appear in rough spots. Feel free to reset the game until the layout of the sublevel and the enemies is right. You will mostly need blue pikmin on this level, but not at this moment. Go out and use the cannon beetle(s) to attack other enemies or eachother. Once you feel confident in defence against any enemies remaining, call your blue pikmin up for carring the chess pieces. After you have gotten both of them, go to the cave, and jump in. You do not need all of your pikmin just to delve deeper. They will automatically go to the next level entrance.


The Brute Knuckles allows you to use the [[Rocket Fist]] when collected. There are some Lapis Lazuli Candypop Buds and a Violet Candypop Bud here if you are low on [[Blue Pikmin]] and [[Purple Pikmin]], or you can use the Violet Candypop Bud to harvest 5 more Purple Pikmin. This level has falling boulders from the ceiling, so when going place to place, be cautious. After they all have fallen, the level is fairly simple: use purple pikmin to kill all of the threat enemies. Sense the Orange Bulborb will wake up even if you haven't touched it, you probably should start throwing pikmin about 3 feet away from it, onto it to stun it before it gets dangerous. Get all of the treasures (there is one buried). If you are not ready to fight the boss, jump out the gyser on the level. Otherwise, jump in the hole.

The reason why there was a Lapis Lazuli Candypop Bud on the previous sublevel is this sublevel. Before taking your Blue Pikmin to collect treasure, have the Decorated Cannon Beetles kill the enemies, flame geysers, and each other then collected the two chess pieces with your Blue Pikmin and Bulbmin.


It is possible, although uncommon, for this sublevel to generate a layout with a second circular room with lumber and without the watery room with a ramp, and thus, require no Blue Pikmin to collect the treasures.

This sublevel has boulders falling from the ceiling, so when going from place to place, be cautious. Have a single leader cause the boulders to fall, preferably on the Dwarf Orange Bulborbs and Orange Bulborbs to kill or severely damage them. After they all have fallen, take your Pikmin and kill any stragglers and collect the treasures. Then have your White Pikmin [[Dig|dig up]] the Flame Tiller and collect it. There is also an Iridescent Glint Beetle on this sublevel that can be used to harness [[ultra-spicy spray]]s for the boss.

The final sublevel contains a rematch with the Empress Bulblax, only this time, it produces Bulborb Larvae, which are small and ferocious enemies. Have one leader clear out all or most of the larvae and have the other toss all the Pikmin up on the ledge behind the landing point. Have the leader you sent out call all the Pikmin and fight the huge Grub-dog. The Empress Bulblax also has more [[health]] than it did in the [[Hole of Beasts]].
 
Don't worry about the larva after engaging the boss in combat, as the boss will squish them when it does its rolling attack. After the battle, collect the Repugnant Appendage and kill any remaining Bulborb Larva. The Repugnant Appendage will grant the leaders a massive speed boost and the resistance to a [[Puffy Blowhog]]'s exhaling attack. Exit the cave with the geyser and continue your treasure hunt.

The Bulborb Larva on this floor are probably the worst hazards for the pikmin, besides the Empress Bulblax. Use a captain to run up ahead, hitting and killing any bulborb larvas he finds. It only takes one hit to kill a bulborb larva. After you have gotten rid of most or all of them, take your reds, yellows, and blues up. It is ok if ''some'' of your pikmin die going up. Once you get up to the top, go in front of the empress's face, and start throwing pikmin at it. Once it starts making noise call your pikmin off. Repeat this until it is dead. You do not need to kill new larva that the empress producess, it will get squashed each time the boss roles.
